No Javascript? No Flash? No problem!

We build sites that do not rely on Javascript to maximize the end user base. Many people disable Javascript while browsing the web. While the exact reason of any particular user may not be listed here, the most common reasons are increased browser security, prevention of user interface abuse, and junk filtering. As such, we build all customer websites to be useful both with and without javascript enabled.

Browser Security

As technology continues to evolve, new security holes will continue to find their way into whatever browsers people are using. Many of these security holes can be related, at least in part, to client side code execution. Javascript is software provided by a website that executes in the assumed safe context of a web browser. If a security flaw exists within the browser, javascript programs or similar tools can take advantage of these flaws. To reduce risk, many corporate systems disable browser add-ons and javascript by policy. Even if javascript is, itself, free of security flaws, it can be used as a tool to exploit flaws present in other parts of the system.

User Interface Abuses

While there are good and legitimate uses for javascript, especially in the area of user interface design, some deviant and unethical developers, often at the request of even more deviant and unethical marketing directors, give users good reason to disable javascript by abusing the user interface. These abuses include distracting animations and sounds, pop-up windows, disabling browser features such as the ‘back’ button and scroll bars, preventing keyboard navigation, auto-refreshing without user consent or making any other assumptions of user navigation desires, unauthorized processor use for distributed processing, and forced redirection. In fact, these abuses are so numerous and commonplace that there are too many to list here.

Spam, Advertisements, and other Issues

People visit websites for four simple reasons: information, entertainment, communication, and commerce. They do not visit websites to view advertising and other nonsense. Sites with a high percentage of ads have a low percentage of useful content, and vice versa. Many pages are simply blank with javascript disabled and can usually be safely assumed to contain no useful content. As most advertisements require browser enhancements such as Flash and javascript instead of static image or text links, many users disable javascript to avoid marketing hype. Search engine robots in search of content ignore fancy visual effects. People with disabilities or those using text-based browsers have no Javascript, and many portable devices do not support advanced browser features and have difficulty displaying pages containing anything more robust than XHTML.

Our Solution

Some might see all this as a reason to swear off Javascript and other advanced web technologies completely. Doing so would not be beneficial, as it would ignore the desires of the majority in an attempt to encompass the arguably wiser minority. To this end, we relegate client side dynamic processing to non-essential enhancement of the user interface only wherever possible. While there are an increasing number of content types requiring script, these items are no excuse for failing to present a static content alternative.
